What is Mesopotamia? DO NOW Look at the following picture of a set of ruins in present-day Iraq: What is it? What is it made of? Why was it made? What happened to it?

What is Mesopotamia? Mesopotamia is the region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in present-day Iraq. The two rivers brought rich soil from the mountains in Turkey and deposited the soil along the riverbanks, creating a perfect area for farmland.

What is Mesopotamia? Early agriculture and cities developed in this area thanks to the rivers. Lack of stone or rocks means buildings were built of mud bricks. What kind of people developed in this area?

Group Activity In front of you is an ancient document from about 2300 BCE. Read the artifact and answer the following: What was the purpose in writing this? Do you agree with the author? Why/Why not? Is there another document that has the same purpose as this?
