We are going to finish notes from yesterday We are going to finish notes from yesterday!! Topic: Mexican Revolution EQ: What were the significant events and people involved in the Mexican Revolution?

Where to start… By 1790s Spain stopped funding the missions During the American Revolution, Spain supported the colonists Bernardo de Galvez, governor of Spanish Louisiana, opened the Port of New Orleans to American Ships. After the Revolution, new boundary lines were drawn and Spain’s claim to Florida were confirmed In 1800 Spain was forced to return Louisiana to the French >> US buys the Louisiana Territory from France for $15 million, doubling the size of the US territory

No Man’s Land After this purchase, there was disagreement on the boundary lines btwn Spain’s land and land belonging to the US James Wilkinson, commander of the US forces and Colonel Simon de Herrera, commander of Spanish forces compromised and established a Neutral Ground btwn Sabine River and Arroyo Hondo Line. No country governed there and it became a haven for smuggling and fugitives.

Adams-Onis Treaty In 1819 the US and Spain signed a treaty settling the boundary dispute Spain transferred Florida to the US Sabine River is established as the eastern boundary of Texas US surrendered all claims to Texas Neutral Ground now belongs to the US

New Spain in 1800s Many Mexicans were unhappy with Spain Best jobs were reserved for men sent from Spain Spain increased Mexican taxes to pay for wars in Europe On Sept 16 1810 Father Miguel Hildalgo y Costilla issued a call for freedom from Spain His followers believed that people of Mexico should govern themselves “Grito de Delores” Battled with Spanish forces, but were not able to capture Mexico City Captured in 1811 and executed

Gutierrez-Magee Expedition Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara-supporter of Hidalgo, went to the US for money and supplies Decided to invade Texas to free it from Spanish rule Recruited soldiers to fight for liberation Augustus Magee-resigned from the American Army and joined Lara Gutierrez and Magee founded the Republican Army of the North Wanted a republic govt in Texas which allowed the voters to choose who would represent them August 1812 Gutierrez-Magee, Tejanos, Anglos and Native Americans crossed the Sabine River and captured Nacogdoches and began moving towards Goliad

GM Expedition cont… The Republican Army captured Goliad and eventually defeated Spanish forces at San Antonio Magee died Feb 1813 Trouble broke out in the army as disagreements grew over what kind of govt Texas should have Mexicans wanted appointed officials like New Spain; Americans wanted elections like the US De Lara wanted Tx to stay part of Mexico; Americans wanted total independence or statehood with the US

The End of GM Battle of Medina-1813 Republican army fought its last bloody battle, 20 miles south of San Antonio Spanish General Joaquin de Arredondo defeated the army Arredondo’s men killed most of the army and executed anyone he though was helping GM

Jean Lafitte Pirate Captured Galveston Island and raided Spanish ships coming in to port Aided the American Army during the War of 1812, and was pardoned by President Madison for his service

James and Jane Long James Long Jane Long From Natchez Miss Tried to free Texas from Spain Led a force of 300 men into Texas to capture Nacogdoches > declared TX was free and independent republic and was elected President Went to Lafitte for help, lost the town while he was gone Tried to invade Texas again, but was captured, taken to Mexico City and killed by a guard Jane Long First Anglo woman to settle in Texas, “Mother of Texas” Waited for her husband at Bolivar Point Fired the cannon at Karankawas to protect herselft Eventually learned of her husband’s death and left Texas

End of Spanish Rule 1821 Mexico became independent from Spain; Texas remained part of Mexico Spain only managed to settle 3 main areas (San Antonio, Goliad and Nacogdoches) and was ot successful in attracting new settlers

Spanish Legacy Even though Spain was not successful at settling Texas/Mexico, it made the following impact: Mapped and explored vast lands Named rivers, cities and landforms Laid out the first roads, including Camino Real Brought horses, cattle and pigs to Texas establishing the ranching system (vaqueros & lariats) Spanish customs and culture continue today
