Compound Words Compound words can be hard to spell because they can include many letters. It is easy to leave out letters or mix them up, especially in the middle of words. Characters and Setting A character is a person or animal in the story. A writer tells about the character through what the character says and does. The setting is where the story takes place. A writer usually gives clues in the story that provide readers information about the setting. For example, a forest might have dark twisted trees because the writer wants the setting to be scary. Writing Sometimes authors use comparisons to describe characters of events in writing. One type of comparison is called a simile. When the wind blows through the Golden Gate, the men cling to the girders like caterpillars on a branch. This simile uses a different event to describe the men’s actions. The author does this to help the reader picture what the men are doing. A simile uses the words like or as to compare one object to another. The spring sky is as blue as a robin’s egg.
