Figure 1 Potential Role of ERRγ in the Functional Maturation of β Cells Mammalian β cell maturation occurs during the postnatal period. A novel regulator governing functional maturation is ERRγ. ERRγ shifts metabolism from glycolysis to oxidative phosphorylation and enhances glucose-induced insulin secretion in iPSC-derived β-like cells. The potential role of ERRγ in generation of β cell from neogenesis and transdifferentiation is not understood. β cell maturation has also been associated with neuronal signals and, during weaning, thyroid hormone action, and linked to microRNA and DNA methylation. The potential role of ERRγ in induction of the maturation process in these pathways and processes requires further investigation. The effect of maturation on the ability of β cells to replicate remains controversial. Cell Metabolism 2016 23, 765-767DOI: (10.1016/j.cmet.2016.04.026) Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc.
