Volunteer Storyteller Training Session 4 Trainer: Slides 1-4 10 minutes Welcome participants. In Session 4 there is usually little time for warm-up activities but the trainer may choose to review what was covered in Session 3. K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Session 4 Objectives Practice telling a 6-7-minute story. Offer appreciations and positive critique. Review classroom hints and procedures. Present an outline for a 20-30 minute program including bookends, introductions, and transitions. Complete a training self-evaluation and identify specific requests for future training. Celebrate accomplishments! Ask participants to read the objectives for Session 4 and prioritize their needs. What do you most want to learn how to do in this session? Check your priority objectives. Read the objectives and ask how many chose each item so that the participants are aware of group priorities. Note: In sessions #1-3, the objectives were revisited at the end of the session. For session 4, these objectives are reviewed on the Self-evaluation and Needs Assessment. So, this slide only appears at the beginning of the session. Thank the participants for agreeing to be conscious of time. K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Session 4 Agenda Present Programs Classroom hints and procedures Practice telling and offering critique Present Programs Classroom hints and procedures Self-evaluation and Needs Assessment Celebrate! In order to make the objectives happen, we’ll take part in a variety of activities. The agenda illustrates what we’ll do in the next two hours. Read through the agenda. As you can see some of our activities will be whole group, pair, and group activities. Point to the corresponding symbol. We’ll mix up our activity types so that you won’t be just listening to a lecture. There’s a lot to complete in a short amount of time. Let’s stay on task. Post the agenda on a flip chart. Use symbols for the type of activity. As activities are complete, check off the agenda item so Ps can see how far they’ve come and what’s left to cover. K.S. Weddel 8/2016

It’s Your Turn Introduce your story Tell the story Offer reflections Slide 5 45-55 minutes Participants first introduce, tell and offer personal reflections. Audience members offer 30-second appreciations. This time, Ps are asked to offer critique in addition to positive feedback. The trainer should model effective ways to offer feedback, for example: Have you thought of… When you ____________, I felt ____________. A suggestion would be ________________. It’s important that Ps understand the importance of not offering empty criticism. If a suggestion is offered, tell why. Allow 12 minutes per participant. Include a short break if needed. Depending on the class size, take a break in the middle of the tellings. K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Take a Break and a Breath Break 10 minutes K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Your Program Share & Compare Reflections Does partner’s program have a theme? Are all the elements included? [bookends/introduction/stories/transition/closing] Does the timing work? Is there any flexibility? Reflections What was the hardest aspect of this assignment? How did it help you? What did you learn from your partner’s program? Slide 7 30-35 minutes Work in pairs. Each pair will review programs and answer the questions from the slide. While pairs are working, the trainer can listen in to conversations. Allow 10-15 minutes for this activity. After the pair work, return to the whole group to answer the reflection questions. If time allows, it’s beneficial to show samples of programs used by veteran storytellers. Show the difference between a program used with K-1 grades, 2-3 grades and 4-5 grades.

Classroom Tips and Procedures Storyteller/Student Relationship Storyteller/Teacher Relationship School Security Systems and Storyteller safety Classroom Logistics Slide 8 10 minutes Trainer Note: the contents of this slide may vary from chapter to chapter. This slide is a sample from LLS and can be customized. Storyteller/Student Appropriate touching of children Guest not teacher, role is to tell stories not to teach lessons Storyteller/Teacher Talk to teachers to determine roles, topics, lesson connections, etc. Teachers in SVVSD are not allowed to leave the room when a guest speaker or volunteer is present School Security Each school has a unique system Arrive 10 minutes early to sign in and set up Leave your purse in the car LLS needs to know where you are and when for insurance purposes Classroom Logistics Seating should enhance listening – choose your place well Take suggestions from teachers K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Next Steps Review training log and check off tasks Observe/shadow a veteran storyteller Co-tell with a veteran storyteller Attend monthly chapter meetings Classroom assignment Report Slide 9 10 minutes The purpose of this slide is to let participants know about next steps after training. This slide can be customized to fit chapter procedures. The slide shown is used in the LLS chapter (simply an example). K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Self-evaluation and Needs Assessment Review the objectives from each session. Circle the appropriate answer to reflect on your learning. Slide 10 15 minutes Before distributing the self-evaluation and needs assessment, explain the purpose of the activity. To review what was covered in each session. To allow Ps to rate themselves on performance of objectives. “How did I do?” To offer suggestions and opinions for trainers. To identify needs for future training or chapter workshops. Pass out the self-evaluation and walk through the instructions for completion. Allow 12 minutes for completion. Collect evals and call for questions. K.S. Weddel 8/2016

Let’s Celebrate! Sign and turn in Standards and Guidelines Request “nick name” Request grades or specific audiences Certificates will be issued when observations are complete Slide 11-12 15 minutes Ask Ps to find the Standards and Guidelines document in their notebooks. Please sign the document. On the back of the document, please write the name you want on your official Spellbinders name tag. On the back of the document, please write your request for grade or specific audience. School, nursing home, library. Also, add any special requests you may have for days and times during the week. Collect documents. Show a copy of the certificate and explain that as soon as the log is complete, the certificate will be issued. K.S. Weddel 8/2016
