Starting on the Right Foot Building Our Learning Community Have on the screen as BTs enter the PDC 8:30 – 9:00 New Teacher Orientation Chester Upland School District August 2010

3 Building the Learning Community
First job of a teacher is to get to know the children you will be with for the year. Our Get- to Know packet We will have you experience one so that we can know you better and you can begin to build connections so that our learning community can begin/

5 Name Tent Activity Fold the paper into a tent
Put the information modeled 3- Step Interview A interviews B B interviews A Introduce your partner around the foursome Look in the packet to find one or two more that you would like to use . Post- it. After activity is finished, have each BT introduce himself/herself to the group by stating: name, school, grade/subject

6 Our Norms Give unconditional positive regard to the speaker.
Put cell phones on vibrate and away. Be an active learner. Suspend disbelief.

7 Parking Lot Please take a few post-it’s.
Write your top three concerns or questions that you hope to have addressed or answered during this orientation one on each post-it. We will organize and answer as we go or make sure you get an answer. DISTRIBUTE JOURNALS! First reflection! Please put at least one of these on a post-it note and place it on the chart paper. I will read these and respond.

Each pair will take one of the basic needs Read the description and the activities Brainstorm 2-4 other activities that would meet that need One person from each pair forms a circle of 5 to teach each other and have them write the two or three new activitie on their packetes

Plan- exactly what you want to happen and what you will do when it doesn’t Implement- Teach the procedure, develop the norms Maintain- Reinforce, redirect, remind

19 Rules and Procedures/Routines
Turn to your neighbor (TTYN) and answer, What is the difference between a rule and a procedure? Rules/norms describe behaviors expected in the class (and imply social skills that need to be learned) Procedures /routines are what makes the room run efficiently and effectively- entering the room, homework procedures,etc.

Hot Seat First person stands 1. In order, in the circle, each person gets to ask any question that will help you know the “hot seat” person a little better. 2. The “Hot seater” can answer that question- if she wants to - if not she can say, “I won’t answer that- but I will tell you this about me_______” 3. Turn in your packet to read and remember.
