4 Objectives of Tutorial Training To meet the current AVID Center tutorial training requirement for Essential 8 To enable teachers to train tutors at their site To enhance understanding of what rigor in tutorials looks like and how to improve academic achievement

5 Why a Tutorial Support Curriculum? To provide the tutor and teacher with tools to debrief and refine the tutorial process with students and the elective teacher(s) To provide tools to facilitate rigorous tutorials that assist students in increasing achievement in academic classes

11 Topics for Initial Tutor Meetings Review the meeting topics on 1.4.1 (p.12). Discuss the meeting topics and record questions and/or talking points to be presented in the initial tutor meetings at the site. Example: Student Confidentiality - do not discuss student grades, personal information, phone numbers, etc. with other students.

12 Topics for Initial Tutor Meetings Debrief:  Brainstorm with the whole group additional topics about the logistics of these tutor meetings (when, how often, where, how long, etc.).  Use bottom of 1.4.1 to take notes and add additional topics.

17 Inquiry in a Bag Select an item from your purse, pocket, etc. Place the item into the large envelope at your table. Pass the envelope around your table group and select an item that is not your own.

18 Inquiry in a Bag Write a Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 question for the item that you selected. Refer to 2.5.1 (2 of 2) and 2.5.2 (1 of 2) for support. (pages 86 - 87). Share one of your questions in random order and the group members will decide the level of each question shared. The person whose item is selected should answer the questions. Repeat until time is called.

32 Grade Tutorial Analysis Activity Silent read page 183, #3.12.1 (1 of 7) and skim Student Sample A, B & C #3.12.1 (2-4 of 7). Review Grades Sheet, yellow pages 8 – 15. Number off 1-3 each person should use the grade data corresponding to his/her number from the Grades Sheet Individually, complete the Tutorial/Grade Analysis (Part A) for your selected student; 1, 2, or 3 yellow pages 8 – 9.
