Newspaper Hierarchy Who is responsible for what

Publisher A publisher is in charge of the paper overall. He or she is sometimes the owner of the paper. This person has absolute final say on what goes in or out of a paper. This person signs your paychecks (or in our case hands you a diploma) Most publishers are hands off, and trust their staff. The Flyers publisher is Mr. Starzenski

Managing Editor Oversees the day to day operations of the paper. Consults with the editors. Solves the major problems. Suggests and kills stories. Reports only to the publisher.

Editors There are a variety of editors below the managing editor. Each of these editors work together to ensure paper continuity, and that stories dont over lap

City Editor Oversees the hard news portion of the paper. This person, also for our purposes will write the editorial. Even though at papers an editorial editor would handle that duty and select the letters to the editor for publication. This editor will coordinate with the other Flyer editors and report to me on the status of stories, problems, etc. This person will also be responsible for reading ALL stories before they come to me.

Lifestyle This positions duties include: Music, book, movie reviews Fashion (dress code and you – how illegal your closet really is, etc) Prom Homecoming Pep rallies Trends (those silly plastic bracelets)

Sports Is responsible for all sports stories in the paper. This includes hunting.

Front Page This person is responsible for how the front of the paper looks. One of the most important positions. This editor talks to each other editor to see what important stories have happened and whether they are worthy of a front page.

Special Sections This person oversees any special inserts or magazines the paper puts out. They decide which stories need to be included in the special section.

Photo This person meets with all the other editors to determine what type of pictures are needed to go with each story. Helps other photographers select which pictures to turn in to fit the story.
