1. Deathwatch Magazine Process First, you'll be assigned to a production team of four students. Establish the needed roles for each member of your group in order to get a special edition of the magazine published. For example: publisher, editor, advertising manager and graphic artist. Individuals will report to the group on the progress of each of their areas of responsibility and record in their learning logs how they fulfilled their role. Publisher will supervise the overall coordinating of the editorial team and must ensure that each member is on- task and that the deadlines are met. Editor will supervise the production of articles to ensure that essential articles are included. Editor is also required to write an editorial article expressing a viewpoint.

2. Advertising manager will supervise the design of advertisements for corporate sponsors. Graphic artist will supervise layout and design of magazine. Each group member is required to contribute three articles, two advertisements and two photographs. This is the minimum requirement and more is definitely better! Existing magazine photos and graphics may be cut and pasted to create ads and photo layouts.

3. Of the three mandatory articles per group member, one must be a headline story that is based on the events of the novel. It should be written in a journalistic style (see links under "Writing Tips")."Writing Tips" The second article must be a feature story representative of desert conditions, wildlife or survival (see links listed under "Desert & Survival Resources")."Desert & Survival Resources" The third article must be a "filler story" or column such as: Desert Fashion Do's & Don'ts Letters to the Editor Upcoming movie production of Deathwatch Desert horoscopes Desert celebrities Obituary for prospector

4. With your group members, peruse back issues of People magazine to get an idea of regular features or columns. Remember that all articles, ads, or pictures appearing in your magazine must be Deathwatch related. Brainstorm topic ideas for each area (articles, ads, etc.) with your group members before beginning your research. Possible article topics: Interview with Madec - the man behind the gun Interview with Ben - the man under the sun Is Madec really guilty or does Ben have sunstroke? Who was the prospector and why was he in the desert? Lottery for bighorn sheep hunting in the desert

5. Possible pictures to include: Magazine cover Family photos Ben Madec Desert or on site shots (small town) Weapons, equipment, transportation Prospector and/or his family Desert wildlife/plants Map of desert

6. Possible advertisements to include: Sunscreen Sunglasses Water purifiers Burros for rent Sun hats Lip balm Desert tours Your first step will be to research your articles. Use the Internet Resources listed to conduct your research. Once you have completed your research, you will need to write your articles. Then edit, edit, edit! All articles must be typed. As a group you may decide to copy and paste a magazine together or use software such as Aldus PageMaker. Your group must decide.
