She was just 25 when she went missing. Who was Suzy Lamplugh? Suzy Lamplugh was an estate agent who, in 1986, went to meet with a client, and disappeared. To this day she has never been found, and her disappearance remains a mystery. She was just 25 when she went missing.

This years’ campaign is: What does Suzy Lamplugh Trust do? Campaign for safety Each year, we run National Personal Safety Day, a day to encourage everyone to think more about personal safety, and ultimately, lead safer lives. This years’ campaign is: Keep It REAL

Keep It REAL: The Campaign How should you prepare? What are the risks you’d need to be aware of? What would help you to stay alert? What choices could you make to ‘stay legal’ and safe.

Risk faced by young people Who is more at risk of violence from a stranger: A young man between the ages of 16-24? OR A young woman between the ages of 16 and 24?

Risk faced by young people Young women are more at risk from sexual violence or assault, but if you are a young man, between the ages of 16 and 24, statistically you are the most at risk of violence and aggression. In fact, young men are twice as likely to be assaulted as young females!

Risk faced by young people Statistics show that young men aged 16-24 are most at risk of violence from a stranger. 61% of victims of violent, crime perpetrated by a stranger in the UK, are men.

Keep It REAL We want to help everyone to ‘keep it REAL’ so you can be Ready, Educate yourself, be Alert and stay Legal.

Keep It REAL Don't assume it wont happen to you. Being ‘Ready’ is all about preparing yourself. Before leaving the house, heading to a friends, or off on a night out, make sure you’re prepared.

Keep It REAL Make sure you tell someone where you are going, and when you will get back. Make sure your mobile phone is charged up and has credit before you leave. Let someone know when you have arrived at your destination. Keep your valuables out of sight when you are out on your own.

Keep It REAL Know who to call in an emergency. Plan your journey before you leave. Check that the trains/buses you were planning on getting are running as normal. If you’re going to travel by taxi, then book it in advance. Perhaps think about carrying a personal alarm.

Keep It REAL Understand the risks of the environment around you. Are the people or environment around you a risk?

Activity What are the risks? PEOPLE Can you think of anyone who might be a risk to you? Discuss in your group. ENVIRONMENT Can you think of a place that might be high risk? Discuss in your group. ONLINE Are there any risks when you go online? Discuss in your group.

Keep It REAL Avoid speaking on your phone or wearing headphones whilst out alone, as this could limit your awareness of risks or dangers.

Keep It REAL Try to keep your valuables out of sight, and stay alert when out and about. Keep you eye on traffic going by, and people around. If you notice anything suspicious or feel unsafe, then tell someone else, such as a police officer, security staff, shop keeper, parent, teacher or station staff, depending on where you are.

Keep It REAL Carrying a weapon or pepper spray is illegal. You can carry a personal alarm. The maximum penalty for just carrying a knife for adults in 4 years and a £5000 fine.
