Listening Comprehension Read Aloud Fix it! Good readers try to read every word correctly, or accurately. When they realize that they have read a word incorrectly, they go back and reread it so that the sentence makes sense. Connect with what you know. Think about your first day at a new school. Turn and talk to a partner about your first day at a new school. “First Day Jitters” is the title of the story I am going to read to you. Stories about things that could happen in real life are called realistic fiction. I know that realistic fiction is like real life. Listening Comprehension Read Aloud Focus Skill: Characters and Setting Two important parts of every story are the characters – people in the story – and the setting – when and where the story takes place. Listen to identify the characters as I read “First Day Jitters”. Just as in real life, the characters do not stay in one place; so one story can take place in several settings.

Setting . I’m going to read part of “Ruby the Copycat” aloud. I’m going to read very carefully so I don’t make any mistakes. Sometimes reading a little slower will help me be more accurate. If I read a word wrong, I’ll reread it correctly right away. I will also pat attention to the end marks in the story so I know when to pause. Look on page 22. This is the first time Ruby enters her new classroom. What does the illustration show you about how Ruby might be feeling? She looks shy and a little nervous TURN TO PAGE 23! Remember you often learn about a character by looking at the pictures and paying attention to what the character does. You can also get clues about what a character is like by reading what the character says or thinks. t35

Fluency Remember that good readers focus and ready slowly enough to make sure that they are reading correctly! As I read part of “Ruby the Copycat,” I am going to read very carefully so I do not make any mistakes. I will think about what I am reading so I will know if I make a mistake. I will go back and reread to correct my mistake. I am also going to look at the end marks so I know whether to read each sentence as a statement or a question.
