Reading Tips for Home: To help children gain confidence, parents can read a sentence or a page to a child. The child can then point to the words and repeat the page back. There is no wrong way to read with your child  -If your child is stuck on a word, it is okay for children to look at the picture clues. Eagle eye (looking at picture clues) is a reading strategy that we teach them  If stuck on a word, you can prompt them to look at the picture, stretch the sounds out, or have them think about what would make sense. If truly stuck, it is okay to tell him/her the word. Many parents get discouraged when children bring the same book home to practice. Rereading helps children learn words automatically, recognize sight words and helps build their fluency. They also gain confidence in their abilities! We read every night! What else can I do to help my child become a stronger reader? Talk to your child about what they have read. Talking about books will help your child develop a strong vocabulary and will also build their comprehension. These are two very important skills. I am a big believer that learning to read can and should be fun! Students will earn book bucks in class to ‘rent’ the game for a week. Read to them- It is important that children hear their parents read aloud or listen to books on a cd. Local libraries have children’s books on cds. This is a great way to entertain children in the car- I found this out by personal experience As always, please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions.
