Standard SC.6.L.14.5 Identify and investigate the general functions of the major systems of the human body (circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal) and describe ways these systems interact with each other to maintain homeostasis.

Essential Question How does the nervous system work to allow the body to maintain homeostasis?

Vocabulary Brain - an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity. Nervous System - he network of nerve cells and fibers that transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body. Sensory Organs - an organ of the body that responds to external stimuli by conveying impulses to the sensory nervous system.

What does the nervous system do?

The nervous system is one of the most important body systems The nervous system is one of the most important body systems. It tells us what is going on in the outside world and how to act or react to it. The nervous system takes in information through our sensory organs which travels through our spinal cord through nerve cells as electric impulses all over the body and up to the brain. Anywhere so it is important the neurons can be able to get the information up to the brain. Then it is up to the brain to process the information and trigger a reaction.

The brain The brain is in charge of processing the information from the senses and figuring out what to do next. The brain is made up of the cerebellum and four other parts: the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and the occipital lobe. Frontal Lobe is involved in motor skills such as problem solving, memory, language, judgement, and social behavior Parietal lobe deals with sensory that has to do with taste, touch, or temperature Temporal lobe is in charge of processing any information that comes in auditory form Occipital lobe processes everything the eyes see The cerebellum is the part that simply acts as the post office. It is responsible for delivering all the information needed through the spinal cord so the reaction can be made possible

Nerve Cells Nerve cells or neurons are the cells that are all over the brain and carry information from the cerebellum to the needed lobe The info moves through the neurons 200 times per second so it can get the info back to the brain as soon as possible.

What are some diseases that can affect the nervous system? Epilepsy - in which abnormal electrical discharges from brain cells cause seizures Huntington's disease - which is an inherited condition that cause the nerve cells in the brain to degenerate Stroke - which occurs when there is bleeding on the brain or the blow flow to the brain is clogged
