Reading Workshop Wednesday 5th October 2016

Aims of the session Expectations The teaching of Reading in school Ways you can help at home

Literacy ~ Reading Early Learning Goal Children read and understand simple sentences. They use phonic knowledge to decode regular words and read them aloud accurately. They also read some common irregular words. They demonstrate understanding when talking with others about what they have read.

Literacy ~ Reading What we do… Dedicated group and individual reading Shared reading Daily story session Home readers, Library books Home-School Diaries Book bags every day

The simple view of reading

How we do it Walk through the book Difficult words, high frequency/repeating words Strategy check Decoding skills Pictures as clues to read unknown words Phonics Known high frequency/phase words New vocabulary

Reading at home Quality quiet time Tell them what you’re looking for Walk through the book/first few pages, pulling out difficult words Ask them how they will tackle new words - NOT JUST SOUNDING OUT Read together at their level Return to the text Record any comments you have in the Home/School Diary

Thank you for listening.
