How to write a well-supported response Clearly answer the question Explain why/how you know Include textual evidence that supports your answer Each response should be about three sentences.

Reader Response Questions What overall impression does Alexie create of life on the reservation? (Point to at least two specific examples from the story) Alexie refers to his hair in the opening sentence of the essay and in the sections on second grade and twelfth grade. What do you think his hair symbolizes, and why?

Reader Response Questions 3. Why does Alexie end each section with a brief paragraph or single sentence? What effect does this have on the story? Refer to a specific example in your explanation. 4. The title “Indian Education” refers here to more than just formal schooling. What is another implication of the title? Be sure to explain your thinking.

Reader Response Questions 5. Of the common topics/themes found in Post-Colonial Native American lit (in your notes from last week!), which does “Indian Education” best show? Give at least two specific pieces of textual evidence and explain.

Exit Slip 6. Find someone in your group and discuss your answers to #5. Did anyone support a different theme than you in Alexie’s story? If so, do you agree with their reasoning or not? Explain. If not, discuss with your group: would any theme/topic other than the one you all chose work for Indian Education? Or is your theme the only one you all see in the story? Explain.
