Presentation transcript:

JAZZ Jazz is a musical style that originated at the beginning of the 20th century in black communities in the Southern United States, especially in New Orleans. It was born out of a mix of African and European music traditions. Its African elements are the blue notes, improvisation and repetition. At the beginning of the 19th century the Atlantic slave trade brought almost half a million Sub-Saharan Africans to the United States. The slaves largely came from West Africa and brought strong musical traditions with them. African music was functional, for work or ritual.

The music of New Orleans in 1920s and 1930s had a strong effect on the creation of American jazz. Many jazz performers played in bars and theatres in the city; also marching bands played at funerals and processions for the African American and European American community. The instruments used in marching bands and dance bands became the basic instruments of jazz: brass instruments, the trumpet, the saxophone and drums.

New Orleans 300.000 people live in the city, 1.200.000 people live in the Greater New Orleans area. People here are very relaxed. Its nickname is “the big easy”. The city was named after Orléans, a city located on the Loire River inFrance, and is well known for its particular French Creole architecture, its multilingual traditions, its cuisine, jazz music and its annual celebrations and festivals, especially Mardi Gras, that is a typical French Carnival with music, costumes and masquerades. New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana, on the mouth of Mississippi River, the longest in the USA (4000 km). In 2005 the city was hit by Hurricane Katrina. Most of the people left the city and fled to other parts of the state. Unfortunately many people couldn’t flee and died.
