2 What is Jazz? Jazz is a uniquely American music
The Genre bloomed around the 1920’s It’s a combination of African drumbeats and European instruments. Jazz has influenced many spirituals black churches Jazz was improvisational Jazz became the first uniquely American music to be played and loved around the world Jazz blended together in improvisational Jam sessions by talented musicians. Jazz was played by the top of their head not a music sheet they had to like classical music Improvisational means to make up your own music as you play, rather then just reading notes on a sheet of paper The Music Genre became so popular in the 1920’s it was often called the Jazz Age. It grew from American Folk Music

3 What music genres inspired jazz?
African rhythms and European harmonies inspired jazz. Jazz music was distinctly American musical form. In the 20th century these form genres begin to mix and turn into blues and ragtime music. Just playing what you feel and be yourself helped inspired the genre of Jazz Music 19th century American bands and instruments helped inspired the genre of Jazz African American Folk music Famous people who went and did big things like Louis Armstrong

4 Where was jazz invented?
Jazz was originated through Call and Response. African American’s brought the love of jazz music to the north when they migrated By the 1920’s, there were several thousands jazz clubs in Harlem Call and Response was a way that African American Cultures used to communicate during public gatherings, discussing religious rituals When African Americans migrated from the South to the North they brought the Genre of Jazz music with them, that is how the music was brought to the North When the African Americans migrated to the North by the 1920’s Jazz music was popular in the NHorth thus having all these Jazz clubs and night clubs Harlem became a magnet for Jazz lovers

5 What Helped Spread The Word About Jazz Music?
People heard the Jazz Music played from the night clubs in Harlem Radio helped a lot spread music Many people heard new Jazz music on records Musicians began to write new music Used the Cotton club for live nationwide broadcast African Americans used the radio to spread new recordings of Jazz music Used the voice of Jazz to spread a different style of music and dancing The Cotton Club was used a lot to spread the word of Jazz Music

6 What was the Charleston?
The Charleston is a dance named for the harbor city of Charleston It was a dance that became popular in the 1920’s The Charleston dance that came from the earlier styles of dance. (The Black Bottom) The Charleston dance can be danced solo with a partner or in a group

7 Cotton Club The Cotton club was the most famous club in Harlem
Musicians and dancers were African American The cotton club was a famous jazz music club. Operated from 1923 to 1940, during the American’s Prohibition era. Founded by gangster Oweny Maddon (White man) Most of patrons were white The name was very interesting. -Black performers communicated messages to the whites -they talked about their need to be treated as equal in the Americans society - Helped the whites understand the pain that segregated caused black americans.

8 Who were famous faces of Jazz?
Louis Armstrong- Famous for his trumpet solo’s, also people loved his gravelly . From New Orleans Lena Horne –American singer in night clubs. Performed at the Apollo theater . From Brooklyn NY. Josephina Baker- Famous singer , dancer, and actress from Missouri. Bessie Smith –Famous American Jazz singer from Chattanooga Tennessee Greatest singer in her era
