TODAY ELA notebook Open to the next blank page and title it ACTIVE VOICE A writing utensil Turn in your coloring sheet to the tray!

ACTIVE and PASSIVE voice The correct way to write a sentence: Subject  Verb  Direct Object The students learned grammar. S V DO Find a direct object by asking “subject, verb, WHAT?”. The “what” is the direct object! THIS IS ACTIVE VOICE.

ACTIVE and PASSIVE voice The WRONG way to write a sentence: Grammar was learned by the students. **The DO-er of the action is SUPPOSED to be at the beginning of the sentence. THIS IS PASSIVE VOICE.

How to determine active vs. passive: What is the ACTION of the sentence? Who/what is actually DOING that action? That word should be in the SUBJECT position of the sentence. If it is, ACTIVE If it is not, PASSIVE

Let’s try! All of the students turned in their tests. ACTIVE! The pencils were sharpened by the teacher. Passive. Correct= The teacher sharpened the pencils. The flowers were watered by the gardener. Passive. Correct= The gardener watered the flowers. The overdue library books were finally returned. Passive. Correct= The student finally returned the overdue library books.
