A genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner. These essays require research based on: Previously published literature Student collected data Surveys Observations, Experiments Argumentative essays provide the student with the opportunity to learn about their subject They use this learning to develop a position and then support it.

Argumentative vs Expository Based in extensive research Uses some research and some invention Usually a longer piece. (Term Projects, Final Papers) Usually shorter Rarely used as in-class work due to the need for research Usually used as in-class writing assignments

The Structure of an Argumentative Essay Introduction Paragraph Contains a clear, concise, and defined thesis statement. There should be some background information that explains what the topic is and why it is important. Generally the information is arranged so that the background information sets up the reader to receive the thesis statement.

Body Paragraphs Transitions are important. Paragraphs should flow from one piece of information to the next using transition words. Information should be arranged logically All paragraphs should contain an Transition, topic sentence, support, and a concluding statement. Each paragraph should be limited to the discussion of one general idea. Increases readability Creates a clear argument All paragraphs must be logically linked to the thesis (usually attained through the use of a topic sentence)

Body Paragraphs Counter Arguments: In an argumentative essay it is important to consider opposing views. Students should explain how other views do not align with their thesis, rather than begin an argument over how they are wrong Ex.They are not well informed, or are out of date.

Conclusion In argumentative essay a conclusion must do more than restate the thesis statement. The conclusion should evaluate the thesis statement based on the evidence that is presented in the essay This is an important part of the essay as it will leave a lasting impression You should:  Restate why the topic is important Review the main points Review your thesis.

General Structure Can vary in length depending on topic and evidence used but usually follows a five paragraph essay format Five Paragraph Essay Introduction Three evidence based paragraphs Can include one as a counter argument paragraph Conclusion
