Opening Assignment - HONORS Do the Lab Zone Skill Activity page 11

Opening Assignment---Find the sentences on page 15… first paragraph Opening Assignment---Find the sentences on page 15… first paragraph. Copy into notebook, fill in blanks Over the years, as scientists studied the natural world, they did more than collect _____. The developed more complete _______ for their __________. Scientists use __________ and develop ______ and ______ to increase people’s understanding of the _________ ____________.

Opening Assignment Take piece of paper on the table I will collect your lab if you did not hand it in on Friday. Staple your papers like this: Rubric (top) Data table (you filled out when doing experiment) Graph Conclusion

Foldable Scientific Model Scientific theory Scientific Law

Open your foldable Definition Examples of Models Why is the explanation about how dinosaurs became extinct a theory? Examples of laws… why are they laws in your own words. How are they different from theories?

How Science develops

Scientific Models What is a scientific model A model is a picture, diagram, computer image, or other representations of an object. Physical models, such as a globe, can look like the real thing.

Scientific Theory What is it? An explanation of something based on scientific knowledge that is the results of many observations and experiments. It is not a guess or someone’s opinion. It is data collected from several experiments over time that support a hypothesis Theories can change if new knowledge is gained from additional experiments

Scientific Theory What scientific theory we will study? Atomic theory

Scientific laws What is it and how is it different from a scientific theory? It’s a statement about how things work in nature that seem to be true all the time. They are less likely to change than theories. Laws tell you what happen under certain conditions but do not necessarily explain it.

Scientific Laws What Scientific Laws will we study? Law of conservation of mass. Law of conservation of energy
