Objectives Bill of Rights Lesson The student will… Identify the rights granted by the Bill of Rights and later amendments Categorize rights in the BOR as individual freedoms, protection from government power, or rights of the accused

The Bill of Rights

Warm-Up The year is 2056 and we have just won a war against alien invaders. The war destroyed the world and we must set up a new government. What is a potential fear or concern we may have about the new government?

Choose 10 Protections The people shall have the right to own weapons Everyone must be friends with everyone else People are free to express their opinions on any subject A person accused of a crime has the right to a fair trial Criminals shall not be punished in a way that is mean or weird The people shall have the right to clean streets and parks Laws can’t stop adult citizens from voting The people shall have the right to a free education All people shall be protected equally by the laws The people shall never be enslaved No person shall be searched without a good reason The people shall be free to drive as soon as they can operate a car No person shall be required to fight in a war No person shall be put on trial twice for the same crime A person may follow any religion or no religion

The Bill of Rights Anti-Federalists vs. Federalists Anti-Federalists fear big government and want a list of protected rights The Federalist say listing rights is dangerous

The Compromise The compromise to get the Constitution ratified is the Bill of Rights There are three categories to the Bill of Rights Individual freedoms Protections against government abuse and power Rights of people accused of crimes Over time, more amendments that protect people have been added 13th, 14th, and 15th for African Americans 19th for women 26th for young people

Content of the Bill of Rights Which amendment protects which rights? Summarize the amendment you’ve been assigned and draw a picture to represent the amendment EXAMPLE- 15th Amendment Text-“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” Summary- The government cannot pass laws that keep citizens from voting because of their race.

Bill of Rights Quilt We will be working together to make a Bill of Rights Quilt to hang in the hallway! Each group will be responsible for making a quilt square based on their assigned amendment. Draw a border, summarize the amendment in your own words, draw a picture that illustrates/symbolizes the amendment, and finally categorize the amendment. Rights of the accused, Individual freedom, or freedom from government power

No unreasonable searches and seizures The right to have a jury hear your case in a criminal trial The government cannot deprive you of life, liberty, or property without due process Bail, fines, and punishments must not be excessive Did you find a right not listed in the Constitution? It still belongs to the people You don’t have to house soldiers in your home during peacetime The right to have a jury hear your case in most civil trials Citizens can own guns You have the freedoms of speech, religion, press; and the right to assemble peacefully and petition the government If a power isn’t given to the federal government, it goes to the state of the people
