Genetics Vocabulary

Genetics –The study of inherited characteristics Inherited Traits – A trait or characteristic that is given from parents to offspring through reproduction

Gene – Part of your DNA which contains instructions for your body’s look. You have 2 genes for each trait. 1 from Mom and 1 from Dad.

Allele - The different versions of Genes Allele - The different versions of Genes. Can be either dominant or recessive. Capital letter = dominant Lower case = recessive

Genotype- The genetic makeup of an organism. Example: Heterozygous (Rr) Phenotype – The appearance of an organism Example: Brown Hair

Heterozygous – When the alleles are different. Example: Rr Gg Hh Homozygous – When the alleles are the same. Example: RR rr GG gg
