NIH Health Reform Act, 2006 Sept. 26 The bill would also require the Director of the NIH to: …Establish an electronic data base to track research activity… The recent NIH Reform Act of 2006 specifically targeted the building of an electronic data base to track research, and to make the research of the NIH more available to US and world. NIH Mission Statement …directs programs for the collection, dissemination, and exchange of information. The NIH Mission statement reflects a similar message, that the scientific information itself is not valuable unless it is disseminated, exchanged…and used.

NIH Supercourse Goals Bridge Between research and classroom Improve NIH’s National and Global Transparency e-Recruiting of students into Science and the NIH Taxpayer Accountability There are 4 areas to which a NIH Supercourse is targeted. The first is to break out of our research and classroom silos to share. In doing this we will establish more effective transdisciplinary sharing systems. Most people world wide know the names of NIH, but few know the specifics about NIH research. During the past few years the numbers of US Citizens going into hard sciences, and apply to NIH has been diminished. Finally, the tax payers know little about the research workings of the NIH. A NIH Supercourse can greatly help for each of these areas.

Circle of Science Research Education For 100s of years research and education have gone hand in hand. Bright young students in our classroom, would foster our thinking, and we would stimulate the future generations. There has been a major problem with this circle of knowledge breaking down. Our research findings now reach the classroom in 4-5 years. The NIH Supercourse can bring new knowledge into the classroom in minutes rather than years. How can we improve science and education worldwide? Question: How can we improve science and education worldwide? Answer: The concept of the Supercourse is simple To improve the teaching of science by sharing the best lectures of you, I, and the world’s scientist. The concept is that of the science of translation from research to the classroom.. Get better lectures

But how do I get better lectures? Why don’t scientists share our most exciting PowerPoint lectures for free? We have built an open source system to collect the best PowerPoint lectures in the world and to share these for free. Ours is a library of the best of the best lectures on Global Health and Prevention, we propose to do the same thing for NIH Science.

Helping Teachers Empowering, not Replacing the teacher We collect PowerPoint lectures rather than video or web casting. The reason for this is with a web cast, Dr. Zerhouni would teach the students in Cairo. Instead, we want Dr. Zerhouni to provide his materials to the teachers in Cairo, thus empowering s/he. This approach leads to improved teaching for generation after generation.

With the Supercourse we have networked close to 38,000 academic faculty members from 152 countries.

2752 We have the largest collection of global health lectures with close to 3000 educational modules. It is an open source system that any teacher can use for free. We receive 75-100 million hits a year and have 42 mirrored servers in places like Mongolia, China Sudan, Pakistan, etc. We plan to collect the lectures of the NIH and do the same thing. Lectures

Just in Time Lectures 120 countries 400,000 students We have created a program of “Just-In-Time” lectures where we mobilize global experts when events like the Tsunami, Katrina, Bam Earthquake, etc. take place. More teachers and students have seen these lectures than any lecture. These are PowerPoint lectures distributed through the Internet. We could do the same thing, such as with a major finding at the NIH where we distribute the new lecture within minutes to the classrooms of the world. 120 countries 400,000 students

In many developing countries they have not seem a journal in 15 years. Here they will obtain the lectures of the best scientists of the NIH to use to educate their students. Mirrored Server Lahore, Pakistan NIH Supercourse Pittsburgh We are providing copies (mirrors) of the course for free. These will be regularly updated. The mirrors are important as they speed the image transmission. Also having the copies on ones computer will increase usage. We propose that the NIH Supercourse also establish mirrored servers around the world.

Beginnings of NIH Supercourse 13 Institutes, 65 lectures The NIH Supercourse has already begun. It was “seeded” with a wonderful lecture from Dr. Zerhouni, and now has rapidly increased in the numbers of the lectures. Finally, Taxpayers will be able to look through the lectures to see what the outstanding NIH scientists are developing.

If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it. Margaret Fuller NIH and Science have stayed in their dark stove pipes. An NIH supercourse will be a like a window, allowing the scientists to peer out, and the world to peer into it. In addition we scientist are better able to develop transdisciplinary research as we will be able to see and understand what our colleagues in other disciplines are doing. An agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services, the NIH is a Federal focal point for health research. Helping to lead the way toward medical discoveries that improve people’s health and save lives, NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases. There is a critical need to share the discoveries of NIH researchers with the scientists in the US and worldwide. Supercourse is a wonderful tool to achieve this goal.
