Struggling in a Class? Should you Drop or Audit?

Drop/Withdraw The last day for a student to drop a class (withdraw from a class) with a grade of W is in November/April (fall/spring). “Drop” and “Withdraw” are synonyms. Meet with advisors and professors before dropping any class. Contact Bursar, Financial Aid, Scholarship, and program offices before dropping classes. Students receive no credit for a dropped class.

Students: know your status, know your options. Drop/Withdraw If, after discussion with Instructor, you and your instructor agree that you have NO chance of passing a class, you might consider dropping the class. You must have 12 credit hours or above to remain “full time.” If you drop below 12 credit hours, you may have additional fees or status problems. Contact Bursar, Financial Aid, Scholarship, Veterans Affairs, program offices. Students: know your status, know your options.

What is an Audit? When a student audits a course, the student attends and participates in the class, but does not receive credit for the course. Auditing a course allows a student to keep the credit hours, but not the course credit. Auditing may be an option if you are not excelling in a class and will benefit from remaining in the class before taking it again. If it is a course that you will not repeat, auditing may take a bad grade off your record.

Audit Students wishing to Audit MUST consult with their Academic Advisors and Instructors. The Instructor MUST sign the Audit form (see Registrar Forms). Attendance is required for an Audit. Instructor MAY add other requirements. (Get these in writing.) Instructors may not allow Audit status; discuss this option at least a week before Audit deadline.

Audit The deadline to Audit is in November/April (fall/spring). Consult with Instructor and Academic Advisor BEFORE deadline. Successful Audit: Grade of AU; credit hours count toward full-time status, but course does not count toward degree. NO effect on GPA. Unsuccessful Audit: Grade of E; negative effect on GPA.

How to Decide: Discuss options with Instructor. Discuss options with Academic Advisor. Weigh present and future options: can you pass the course with extra work? tutoring? extra effort? Stay in the course. might you pass the course, and if you don’t you will take the course again? Stay in the course. do you and your professor agree that you will not pass the course? Ask to Audit.
