Frida Kahlo

Main Facts Born July 6, 1907 Had polio Died July 13, 1954 Mexican/European heritage Self-portraits expressed pain & passion Paintings honored national & indigenous traditions Paintings honored feminists Need to know the definition of indigenous for the “Frida Kahlo” quiz.

An accident severely injured Frida When Frida was 18 years old, she was on a bus that was hit by a trolley car. She broke her spinal column, collar bone, ribs, pelvis, leg, foot, and shoulder. She had a rod of metal through her abdomen, ruining her ability to bear children. She had 35 surgeries in her lifetime.

1/3 of her portraits are self portraits. Frida is quoted, “I paint myself because I am so often alone, because I am the subject I know best.” Because of her injuries from the accident, she was laid up in bed more often than not, hence the self portraits.

Frida married Diego Rivera Diego Rivera was a famous Mexican muralist, and he was 20 years older than Frida. Frida was his 3rd marriage, and actually his 4th marriage also, as they divorced and remarried. Their marriage was rocky—both Frida & Diego had affairs, bad tempers, countered with passion and support for one another’s artistic work.

Assignment The next 6 slides are portraits Frida Kahlo painted. Write ONE analysis about each painting. Analyzing is not describing. I don’t want sentences like “The sky is gray.” I want sentences like “The sky may represent her emotions at the time—gloomy and sad.” Google analyze vs. describe if needed. The last slide of the PowerPoint needs FIVE points of analysis. Submit them through my contact form on my website, or click here to be taken there. Label them as follows: Deer: Leaves: Dresses: Monkey: New York Husband: The Two Fridas (need FIVE points) Don’t forget to include the Diego Rivera questions from earlier in the PowerPoint!
