Presentation transcript:

Collection of national census data Expert Group Meeting to Review Critical Issues Relevant to the Planning of the 2010 Round of Population and Housing Censuses 15-17 September 2004 New York Collection of national census data through the United Nations Demographic Yearbook Demographic and Social Statistics Branch United Nations Statistics Division

Context Evaluate the impact of resolution 1995/7 Extent to which Member States have continued to provide census results to the United Nations and other appropriate intergovernmental agencies

Decline in the number of countries that provided data between the 1990 and 2000 census round

Differences between questionnaires in terms of response Countries and areas (in percentage)

Country response varies from topic to topic within each questionnaire Example: Population Censuses during the 2000 census round Population Marital status Literacy, educational attainment and school attendance Ethnicity, religion and language Migrant stocks

Initiatives by the United Nations Statistics Division Expert Group Meeting aimed at reviewing the United Nations Demographic Yearbook System (November 2003) The 9 technical reports The forthcoming database on census metadata and census topics The forthcoming World’s Women: Progress in Statistics

Issues for the Expert Group Given the current trend in responses to the 2000 census round, how effective was Resolution 1995/7? What are the factors that contribute to the low provision of national census data to the United Nations? What can the Expert Group recommend to ensure higher provision of data and metadata from Member States in the next round of censuses?
