3 Paolo Valente - UNECE Statistical Division Slide 3 Background  Population and housing census is a pillar of national statistical systems  Census provides benchmark for population count at national and local levels  Main source of information on small population groups and for small areas  Produces information required for policy planning, implementation and monitoring  All countries should take census in period 2005-2014 (UN-ECOSOC Resolution 2005/13)
