Of Mice and Men Chapter 3-4 discussion

Chapter 3 After the fight with Curley, Lennie says “You tol’ me to, George,” and “I didn’t wanta hurt him.” What do you think of these comments? Was George doing the right thing by helping Lennie to fight back or was he forcing Lennie into an uncomfortable situation? Steinbeck uses animal imagery throughout the fight at the end of chapter 3. Give two examples of animal imagery from this scene and explain the significance or effect of the example’s use of imagery.

Chapter 4 How is the theme of loneliness developed in this chapter? Who is feeling lonely and alienated? How do they cope with those feelings? Curley’s wife is never referred to by name. Why do you think the author did this? Consider the group featured in this chapter: Candy, Crooks, Lennie and Curley’s wife. How are these characters similar to each other? How are they different? Lennie has three possible futures. He may never change his situation, his situation may worsen, or he may rise above his circumstances and accomplish his dream. Predict what will happen to Lennie. Use evidence from the novel to support your prediction.
