Tag questions are most often used to confirm what we think is true. RULE: Affirmative statements are followed by negative tag questions. EXAMPLES: This is the bus to the zoo, isn’t it? I can skateboard here, can’t I?

Tag Questions with Positive Sentences RULE: A tag question uses the same auxiliary verb that is in the main statement. When the main statement does not have an auxiliary verb, the tag question uses one that corresponds to the tense of the verb in the main statement.

Tag Questions with Positive Sentences EXAMPLES: Main Statements with Auxiliary Verbs Neil Armstrong was the first person on the moon, wasn’t he? Ms. Lee will be on vacation, won’t she? It’s going to rain today, isn’t it? We’ve already seen this movie, haven’t we?

Tag Questions with Positive Sentences EXAMPLES: Main Statements without Auxiliary Verbs You work there, don’t you? You locked the front door, didn’t you?

Tag Questions with Positive Sentences RULE: Because there is no contracted negative form for I am, the negative contraction aren’t is used with the I subject. EXAMPLE: I am on time, aren’t I?

Tag Questions with NEGATIVE Sentences RULE: Negative statements are followed by affirmative tag questions. EXAMPLES: This TV isn’t on sale this week, is it? I’m not allowed to park here, am I?
