Radius – STEM Readiness National Impact Report 2016-2017 School Year

Radius – STEM Readiness Program Reach For the 2016-2017 School Year Radius is EVERFI’s STEM readiness course, focusing on Math, Science and Engineering fundamentals. Radius reinforces STEM thinking through real-world application of skills, all while exposing students to exciting career opportunities in these growing industries. EVERFI and our partners provide an immersive learning environment to communities across the country at no charge to schools or districts, ensuring that students receive the engaging STEM education resources they deserve. Your Impact 53,703 Students 1,579 Schools 273,734 Hours of Learning This STEM education course covers topics such as binary numbers, scientific notation, Pythagorean theorem, and probability. After completing your STEM readiness education program, students have a more thorough understanding of STEM concepts and more likely to show interest in a STEM career.

Importance of STEM Radius students see STEM as a crucial part of their life and their future. A majority of students say understanding each content area of STEM is important. 45% Of students say this course made me think about the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). However, many students report having a weak STEM context: these students are less likely to feel encouraged to excel in STEM by their parents and teachers, are less aware of STEM career options and are less likely to know someone who is working in a STEM career. Only 10% of students with a weak STEM context say they are going to pursue a career in STEM, compared with 58% of students with a strong STEM context. Students with a strong STEM context showed more interest in STEM careers than students with a weak STEM context.

A STEM Future 40% 38% Of students say there are jobs that I would After taking Radius, more than a third (37%) of students said they were going to pursue a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Additionally, students expressed increased interest in specific career areas, with the largest increases in interest in graphic design and computer science. Medicine % Computer Science Graphic Design Math Chemistry 40% Of students say there are jobs that I would like to have in STEM. 38% This course made me think about a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Across the board, students showed an increased interest in STEM careers after taking Radius.

From Students and Educators “I liked how the course included videos about coding before the lessons actually started. Watching the testimonials of people who actually code and program for a living encouraged me to take this course seriously. Before this course I was interested in coding, but I thought I needed to be a genius to learn to code. However, the videos ensured me that anyone can learn to code and gave me the confidence I needed to complete each lesson.” “I like the extra information that the course provides me with throughout the year, and also the fact that it prepares me for some college courses that I may have to take in order to follow my chosen career path.” Student, Brownsville Independent School District, Texas 93% of teachers would recommend the EVERFI course they used this year to a fellow teacher. Student, Arkansas From Teachers “Students were engaged in the activities, and it provides great activities for topics that are not part of the curriculum for enrichment (eg. binary, HTML, etc).” Middle School Math Teacher, British Columbia, CA “Provides a great resource for teachers. Gives kids something different.” 9th Grade STEM Teacher, Mississippi
