International Business Employment Overview The global business field is huge and offers many different types of employment. New technological innovations, communications developments, and increased trade and travel opportunities have led to dramatic growth in international commerce. The rapid pace of change means that this field is dynamic. It needs people who adapt quickly to change and who are willing to learn new skills throughout their international business careers. The International Trade Administration of the US Department of Commerce reported in 2006 that approximately six million jobs in the United States were linked to manufactured exports (http://ita.doc.gov/td/industry/otea/jobs/Reports/2006/jobs_by_civ_totals.html).

Pay scale According to payscale.com, those who possess a BA in International Business earn $39,195 for entry-level jobs. Individuals with an MBA in International Business can expect to earn $50,328 in their first year of employment, while those with an MBA in International Business Management typically earn $65,000 in the first year.

Working in International Business If you seek employment in international business, you may: Work for a multinational corporation. Multinational corporations are companies with their facilities and assets in more than one country. Work for the US government. The federal government is actively involved in global business through numerous departments and agencies, including the Foreign Agriculture Service, the US Foreign Service, and the International Trade Administration of the US Department of Commerce, and the US Trade and Development Agency. Work for an international public economic or financial institution, such as the World Trade Organization, the International Monetary Fund, or the World Bank. Work for an economic development agency. Such an agency might be a private, not-for-profit organization like Oxfam or the Global Fund for Women, or a government agency like the US Agency for International Development (US AID) or the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Co-operative Learning With a partner, find three multinational companies.

Getting Started in International Business If you want to succeed in the field of international business, you need excellent written and verbal communication skills, because much of the international businessperson’s job is about conveying ideas, opinions, and visions to other people. In many cases, it may be helpful to be bilingual or multilingual, especially if you are working overseas or with foreign colleagues.

Skills You must be good with people and able to interact with everyone from the CEO of a big company to a functionary in a small government office. It is important that you have an eye for detail, and have excellent organizational skills. You need to be comfortable working under pressure and be able to multitask and meet tight deadlines. Computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and Internet research skills are extremely helpful when pursuing a career in global business.
