How to Get to…….

Build Your Brand How are you perceived by others in your facility? Do people call you when something is broken or do people call you when they need help solving a problem? Do you spend more time complaining about a situation than you do developing the solution to a problem? I don’t have time vs. How do I become more efficient Are YOU reactive or proactive? Are you actively developing ideas and strategies around how you and your team can better serve your organization?

Be The Anti-Status Quo

Your Value The facilities team is the most important department of any organization; especially a zoo or aquarium. Facilities typically spends the most money of any department Facilities has the most direct impact on the environment of our animal collections (Water quality, air quality, etc.) Facilities has the most direct impact on the aesthetics of our organizations from the customers perspective Facilities drives the overall safety and security of the staff, the animals, and the guests Facilities is the solution to all meaningful sustainability challenges. The success of an organizations conservation efforts is directly tied to it’s efforts in natural resource conservation. When the shit hits the fan……who is leaned on?

What We Need To Be Doing Building relationships Real genuine connections. Conversations not emails. No drama. We need to be part of the leadership team Strategic planning meetings Design and constructions meetings Get involved with topics/issues outside of your department Build credibility Demonstrate your problem solving skills Take the high road and focus on your core values Be patient. Listen more than you talk. Develop quality short and long term plans, demonstrating that you have a good handle on the work that needs to be done. Be the natural leader that you are

Building Credibilty Put smart people around you. Surround yourself with folks that are driven and find folks that are strong where you are weak Lead and grow your staff Be a good listener Have high expectations Find opportunities for training and education Find creative ways to reward and recognize good work Create a culture of growth and progress pushing aside the status quo mentality Allow your staff to be creative and have room to make mistakes Your team is a reflection of you. Are you seeing what you want to see?
