Who Am I? Kingdom – Animalia Phylum – Chordata Class – Actinopterygii Order – Perciformes Family – Pomacanthidae Genus – Pomacanthus Species - imperator

Kingdom – Animalia Animals are multicellular, eukaryotes, consumers that have specialized cells and the ability to move.

Phylum – Chordata Animals in this phylum have a spinal cord down the length of the body. It helps it move and react to the environment through the central nervous system.

Class – Actinopterygii This class includes 24,000 species of ray-finned fishes. This is the largest group of fish. They make up half of all vertebrates

Order – Perciformes This order includes freshwater shore fish that are “perch like.” It is the largest order of fishes. Six-banded sergeant-major Pacific king-fish Brown anemonefish

Family – Pomacanthidae Angelfishes – These fish live in tropical oceans near coral reefs. They have a compressed body and a strong spine with striking colors. Tropical Atlantic, Indian, and (mainly western) Pacific. Strongly compressed body. Angle of preopercle with a strong spine. Three spines in anal fin. Many species have an elongate extension on hind margin of soft dorsal and anal fins. Caudal fin rounded to strongly lunate with 15 branched rays. Vertebrae 24 (10+14). Striking coloration, markedly different between juveniles and adults of many species. In shallow waters of less than 20 m deep, very seldom below 50 m; generally near coral reefs. Social organizations in this group vary from monogamy, harems, promiscousity, and lekking (Ref. 38726). Several species are protogynous hermaphrodites engaging in 'haremic' social system. Pelagic spawners. Species of Centropyge feed primarily on filamentous algae and species of Genicanthus feed primarily on zooplankton; most others feed on sponges, invertebrates, algae and fish eggs. Most species do well in the aquarium, but some food specialists are difficult to maintain. Poma- = operculum, acanth- (gr.) = spine. Three basic feeding styles: predation on sessile invertebrates, herbivory and planktivory

Genus – Pomacanthus These fish generally live near shallow reefs and feed on sponges. They are usually found alone or in pairs and are frequently caught for aquarium use. Pomacanthus paru French Angelfish Pomacanthus annularis Blue ring anglefish

Species - imperator Emperor Angelfish – juveniles are dark blue with white rings like below, while adults have yellow and blue stripes. They are generally found in tropical waters and their population is stable. They are a favorite of scuba divers and photographers because of their bright colors.
