War in Vietnam

Domino Effect A theory that emerged during the Cold War that if one country succumbed to Communism then surrounding countries would also fall. Helped explain American intervention in Vietnam and Korea to the public.

Division in Vietnam In 1954, Vietnam was divided into two parts. Communists controlled the North and the United States supported the South. The United States provided military support to keep South Vietnam from falling to the Communist. In 1965 the United States became actively involved in the Vietnam War when it began bombing North Vietnam

Democracy vs. Communism End of WW2, the U.S. was in competition with the Soviet Union to prove which one was the dominating world power. It was fight between Communism and Democracy. As countries tried to rebuild, the U.S. and Soviet Union began to spread their form of government.

Korea and Vietnam Both countries were divided into a northern section controlled by communism and southern section controlled by democracy. In both cases, the north invaded the south. To protect democracy the U.S. intervened in both Korea and Vietnam to fight against communism.

Rebuilding Japan In 1945, the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Japan is the only nation in the world that has been attacked by nuclear weapons. After the attacks, Japan’s government and economy were devastated.

The U. S. occupied Japan from 1945-1952 in order to restore Japan The U.S. occupied Japan from 1945-1952 in order to restore Japan. Japan’s military was disbanded and weapons factories were closed. General MacArthur helped establish a constitutional monarchy. Japan now has one of the strongest economies in the world.
