Why Implement Road safety Audits?

Benefits of Road Safety Audits Minimise the risk and severity of road crashes that may be affected by the road project at the Construction Site or on adjacent roads Minimise the need for remedial works after construction. Reduce the whole Life Cycle costs of the project Improve the awareness of safe design practices by everyone involved in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads Integrate multimodal safety concerns Consider human factors in all facets of design  

SARF Road Safety Audit courses by numbers 2014 one course was held in Cape Town and one in Gauteng 49 people attended these two courses 2015 4- Five day courses and 2-Three day course were presented 138 people attended in Cape Town, Gauteng, Durban and PE. 2016  3- Five day and 2- Two day courses were held in Cape Town, Gauteng and Durban. 172 people attended 2017 2- Five day and 1-Two course was held in Gauteng and KZN 83 people attended 2018 2-Five courses were held in KZN and Limpopo 37 People attended. A 5 day course is scheduled for Cape Town 16 to 20 July TOTAL: 479

The need for Road Safety Audits in Developing Countries In developing countries there are many more km of Rural Roads than Motorways. A study that was done in Australia in 2016 showed that the rate of been killed on Rural Roads per Km travelled was 4 to 6 times higher than on Motorways. The study showed firstly that the 17 -20 and 21-29 year age groups make up the largest proportion of fatalities by age. Contributing factures identified: Driver Error in Judgement Excessive Speed Driver Fatigue Failure to wear a seatbelt Young drivers (under 25) Driving on Unfamiliar road Old drivers (over 60)
