Goal Setting Mrs. Anthony

Success Means different things to different people It takes time, planning, and a strong desire It means taking action, setting goals, and accomplishing them It means reaching your goals even when the going gets tough

10 Roadblocks to Success No clear vision Fear of failure Lack of determination No action plan Unwilling of change Negative Thinking Lack of enthusiasm Procrastination Making Excuses Not learning from mistakes

Goals vs. Wish Goal: A observable and measurable end result having one or more objectives to achieve in a certain time period Dreams and wants just more specific Goal Setting: To set or adjust for proper functioning Wish: Based on variables that you do not have control over. Something you need, want, or desire, but may not actively pursue.

Cont… *Not every wish can be a goal. For instance you may wish you could live and stay young forever, but since there is nothing you can do to make that happen, it could never be considered a goal.*

In order for something to be a goal… It has to be VERY important to you, personally & worthwhile to you It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions It has to be something you have a reasonable chance of achieving It must be clearly defined and have a specific plan of action YOU MUST HAVE COMMITMENT

The Purpose of Goals The purpose of goals is to give you something that you want to enhance your life in some way, so the most important thing you need to know about goals is that you ought to have some. IT MOTIVATES PEOPLE!

The Benefits of Setting Goals Suffer less from stress and anxiety Concentrate better Show more self-confidence Perform better Are happier

STEPS of goal setting Define the goal PLAN and outline the steps needed to achieve it or strategies you want to do (pick the best way) Consider possible blocks/obstacles, and ways of dealing with them Set deadlines Work towards your goal! Evaluate and reward

“SMART” Goals Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time bound I will get a “B” on my next math test Measurable I will check my homework grade to make sure I am on track Attainable If I complete all of my homework and ask questions I can get a “B” on the next test Realistic I have a “C” average in class, so setting a goal of a “B” on my test is realistic Time bound The next math test will be in 2 weeks

Long term vs. short term Long -term: something you plan to accomplish months or years from now (typically 6 months +) Short -term: something you want to accomplish soon, within a few months
