Presentation transcript:

The Artic The animals The Arctic including polar bears, Arctic foxes, walruses, seals and whales! One species found only in the Arctic is the narwhal, often referred to as the ‘unicorn of the sea’. Why? Well, male narwhals have a straight tusk projecting from the front of their head that can grow to over 3m in length.

The plants Many lichens, mosses, and small shrubs grow in the arctic tundra. Tundra plants get their energy from the sun through photosinthesis like all other plants, but have adapted to low temperatures and low light intensities.

The climate, precipitation and seasons Temperatures as low as –70°C have been recorded in northern Greenland. There isn’t a lot of precipitation (snow, rain, hail, etc…) in the Arctic Less snow falls in the Arctic than rain in the Sahara Desert.

Why this Biome is important to our ecosystem The Arctic is crucial for lots of reasons. Not just because it’s home to the iconic polar bear, and four million people, but also because it helps keep our world’s climate in balance.

Potential environmental problems The ice of the Arctic contains around ten percent of the world’s fresh water. It also plays a super- important role in keeping our global climate stable.
