Joff McGill – Sailability Manager Joining Sailability Joff McGill – Sailability Manager

What we are going to cover… A new process? The questions it is reasonable and useful to ask? A way forward…next steps

“We would like to use the programme vision and outcome frameworks that emerged from the research this summer, and integrate them into future accreditation of the Sailability programme…” Accrediting sites based on both on and off water activities Minimum standards for all sites Ideas and challenges?

Current process of joining A focus on the shore side facilities that support access Not everyone has shore side facilities Complex form Link between the facilities you have and who can be catered for is not clear Categories catered for focus too much on impairment rather than the support and what is on offer Could shift to accessibility statements that outline what is on offer, any limitations your venue has and the steps taken to ensure what is on offer is open to all

Current process of joining Does not help people judge what is on offer on the water Does very little to establish standards all should meet Reputation risk to all if one or two don’t meet standards Process needs to be simple, robust, transparent and ensure clarity of what is on offer

A new approach? A process that supports you to enable sailors to: Know what is going on and enjoy the different opportunities available Feel safe and able to raise concerns Take part in the activities on offer Discuss with RYA Questions Explore Advice Access audit Toolkit Action plan Access statement Apply Outline What and Why Governance and Duty of Care Checklist We will... The RYA will.. Update Annual check of details held Tell us if you don’t want to continue

Safe, fun and open A self declaration checklist covering: What will be on offer Policies and procedures Facilities, boats and equipment Operations People Some joint commitments What is reasonable to ask? Is anything missing? How hard will it be for groups to respond?

Safe Fun Open Creating a lifetime habit Connecting with others I feel welcome and enabled Creating a lifetime habit I am becoming active I am increasing my activity I am taking part in regular activity / sailing I am building my self-esteem My mental well-being has improved I am gaining skills and qualifications I can share my skills and passions with others I am learning new skills I feel happy and enjoy taking part I am building my social skills and confidence I feel part of a community Safe I feel safe and can raise my concerns Fun I feel welcome and have fun Open I am able to take part Short-term Medium-term Long-term Delivery Principles Outcomes for sailors Improving well-being Increasing activity Learning new skills Connecting with others

Task #1 The broad questions it is reasonable for the RYA to ask? Three questions: in 3 groups – 15 minutes

Task #2 Specific questions - what is reasonable to ask? Is anything missing? How hard will it be for groups to respond? 3 groups; 6 sheets – 2 per group; 15 minutes then pass the sheets on

Access audits

Task #3 Conclusions and next steps 3 questions, 7 mins each, then pass it on to the next group. Self declaration? Targeted activity vs truly inclusive? Next steps?
