Topic: Solids, Liquids and Gases EQ: How are the attractive forces between particles different in solids, liquids and gases?

Two factors affect the state of matter 1. The amount of energy of particles present (this can change). 2. The distance between particles Background information: Atoms have (-) and (t) parts that attract each other

Kinetic Theory of Matter Matter is made up of particles which are in continual random motion.

STATES OF MATTER SOLIDS Particles of solids are tightly packed, vibrating about a fixed position. Force between particles: Slow movement + particles being close together =strong attractive forces. These forces hold them together so they cant slide past each other = definite shape and volume

STATES OF MATTER LIQUID Particles of liquids are tightly packed, but are far enough apart to slide over one another. Force between particles: Move faster than solid and the particles are further apart. Because particles move faster= weaker attractive forces. Particles can slip past each other= indefinite shape and volume

STATES OF MATTER GAS Particles of gases are very far apart and move freely. Force between particles: Particles are very far apart = low attractive forces so the particles can slide past each other very easily. This makes them have an indefinite shape and an indefinite volume.

Description of Phase Change PHASE CHANGES Description of Phase Change Term for Phase Change Heat Movement During Phase Change Solid to liquid Melting Heat goes into the solid as it melts. Liquid to solid Freezing Heat leaves the liquid as it freezes.

Summarizing Activity A. Cut out figure 1 on page. 264 Label each diagram by indicating which figure is a solid, liquid or gas. B. Explain how the attractive forces and the distance between the particles impact the state of matter of each. How does this impact the state of matter.

Description of Phase Change PHASE CHANGES Description of Phase Change Term for Phase Change Heat Movement During Phase Change Liquid to gas Vaporization, which includes boiling and evaporation Heat goes into the liquid as it vaporizes. Gas to liquid Condensation Heat leaves the gas as it condenses. Solid to gas Sublimation Heat goes into the solid as it sublimates.
