Patterns and Estimating Quotients Division Patterns and Estimating Quotients

Division Math Vocabulary Compatible Numbers Numbers in a problem that are easy to work with mentally. Division An operation that is the opposite of multiplication. It breaks a number up into even groups. Dividend A number that is being divided Divisor The number by which the dividend is being divided Quotient The answer or result of a division problem

Dividing Mentally! 600 ÷ 6 = 100

Dividing Mentally! 270 ÷ 90 = 3

Dividing Mentally! 25,000 ÷ 500 = 50

Draw a Picture to Solve 92 ÷ 4 =

Draw a Picture to Solve 78 ÷ 6 =

We can Estimate in Division Too!!!

Find a Compatible Dividend Estimate 156 ÷ 3 ÷ 3 150 ÷ 3 = 50 We change 156 to 150 because 150 and 3 are compatible numbers

Find a Compatible Divisor Estimate 3,200 ÷ 90 3,200 ÷ 90 3,200 ÷ 80 = 40 We change 90 to 80 because 32 and 8 are compatible numbers.

Bring to the Nearest Ten Estimate 228 ÷ 43 228 ÷ 43 228 ÷ 40 240 ÷ 40 = 6 We change the divisor to the nearest 10. We change the dividend to a number that is compatible with 4. Look, It’s easy to divide 24 by 4.
