Social Justice in To Kill a Mockingbird Social Justice Unit Day 19

Daily agenda Bell Ringer: Subject/Verb Agreement Vocab Spotlight: Precocious, qualm, refute Reading Check: TKAM CH28-31 + other parts! Reading Lesson: Symbolism in TKAM Discussion Preparation: Fishbowl

Bell Ringer 5 Minutes Instructions: Make corrections to the following sentence. Tattooing the art of making designs on the face and body by inserting dye under the skin is practiced in Egypt before 1300 b.c.e.

VOCABULARY SPOTLIGHT 15 Minutes Sample Sentences The precocious toddler carried a smart phone containing his personal calendar with reminder alarms. I had a qualm that I had forgotten to do something for school; when Mrs. Barnett distributed the pop quiz, I remembered that I was supposed to read chapters 28-31. I attempted to refute the charge that I was speeding by using the video my friend made while riding in the back seat as evidence. Precocious Qualm Refute Symbol

Investigating Symbol in TKAM 45 MINUTES Step 1: Analyze Lee’s use of symbol in chapters 5 and 10. What does nut grass symbolize? How do you know? Be specific and include as many details as possible. What does the mockingbird symbolize? How do you know? Be specific! Why did Harper Lee include these symbols? How do they help to develop themes and plot? Take out your character log. We will create symbols for some of the characters in TKAM.

20 MINUTES Fishbowl & test Prep You will receive study guides for our fishbowl discussion and for the Unit 3 test. The fishbowl discussion worksheet will be collected for a grade and will also help you study for the test. We will also have a review session available in SMART Lunch on Thursday.
