A MAGNIFICENT BLEND! 11/18/2018

STANDARD The student will describe the cultural characteristics of people who live in Latin America and the Caribbean 11/18/2018

Learning Target I can describe the results of blending of ethnic groups in Latin America and the Caribbean. 11/18/2018

The people and cultures of Latin America are an interesting blend of the native groups in the region and influences of the countries that established colonies there. 11/18/2018

Language is the major factor that links together all the countries of the area and makes it a culture region. 11/18/2018

Because most of the countries in Latin America were conquered by Spain, the Spanish language is the most-spoken language of the region. 11/18/2018

Since Portugal claimed Brazil, Brazilians speak the Portuguese language. 11/18/2018

11/18/2018

After Spanish settlers moved into Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean, ethnic groups began to blend. 11/18/2018

11/18/2018

Spanish people married American Indians. 11/18/2018

Their offspring were called mestizos, or people of mixed European and Indian ancestry. 11/18/2018

Soon, black slaves from Africa were brought to Latin America. 11/18/2018

11/18/2018

When they married Europeans, their offspring were known as mulattoes, or people of mixed black and European descent. 11/18/2018

The major religion in Latin America is Catholicism—again, brought by the European settlers. 11/18/2018

Many of the customs in the region reflect a mixture of ancient Indian and European traditions. 11/18/2018

MATCH THE CAUSE TO THE EFFECT ____1. Spain and Portugal observe Catholic religion. ____2. Countries conquered by Spain. ____3. Same language in many countries. ____4. Europeans marry black Africans. ____5. Europeans marry American Indians. d a a. culture region b. mulattoes c. Spanish language d. GO READ AND PROSPER! 11/18/2018

Have you ever heard a country referred to as “developed” or “developing”? 11/18/2018

The development of a country refers to its economic health. 11/18/2018

11/18/2018

A developed country has good public services like clean water, electricity and transportation. 11/18/2018

Its citizens have good educations, are healthy, and earn good salaries. 11/18/2018

A developing country usually has poor public services, few good jobs, poor healthcare, and largely uneducated workforce. 11/18/2018

One factor that has a huge effect on a country’s economic health is the literacy rate. 11/18/2018

Developing countries typically have low literacy rates, which greatly affects its citizens’ standard of living. 11/18/2018

A developed country has a good standard of living. 11/18/2018

A developing country often has a poor standard of living. 11/18/2018

IF YOU CAN READ, YOU CAN LEARN! 11/18/2018

If you can learn, you can improve your work skills, and get a better job that pays a better salary. 11/18/2018

If you have a better salary, you can improve your standard of living. 11/18/2018

A country that improves the literacy rate among its citizens will improve the standard of living within that country and improve its economy. 11/18/2018

Educated and skilled workers are an important factor in a country’s economic growth. 11/18/2018
