Aha Moments Clues Phrases that express suddenness: What Is It??? “Suddenly I understood. . . .” “It came to me in a flash that. . .” “The realization hit me like a lightening bolt. . . .” “In an instant I knew. . .” What It Shows: Character Development, Internal Conflict, & Plot What Is It??? When you’re reading and suddenly a character realizes, understands, or finally figures something out . . . Ask Yourself: How might this change things?

Again & Again Clues -A word is repeated, sometimes used in an odd way, over and over in the text. -An image reappears several times during the course of the text. What It Shows: Plot, Setting, Symbolism, Theme, Character Development, & Conflict What Is It??? When you’re reading and events, images, or particular words recur in the text. Ask Yourself: Why might the author bring this up again and again???

Memory Moment Clues The flow of the text is interrupted by a character’s memory, which often takes several paragraphs before returning to the present moment. What It Shows: Character Development, Plot, Theme, Relationship Between Character and Plot What Is It??? When you’re reading and a recollection by a character interrupts the forward progress of the story. Ask Yourself: Why might this memory be important?

Words of the Wiser Clues The main character and another go off alone. They have a quiet, serious moment where the wiser character shares wisdom to help the main character solve a problem or make a decision. What It Shows: Theme, Internal Conflict, Relationship Between Character and Plot What Is It??? When you’re reading and a wiser character (usually older) offers advice about life to the main character. Ask Yourself: What’s the life lesson and how might it affect the character?

Contrasts and Contradictions Clues A character behaves or thinks in a way we don’t expect, or a part of the setting is something we would not expect. What It Shows: Character Development, Internal Conflict, Theme, Relationship Between Setting and Plot What Is It??? When you’re reading and you observe a sharp contrast between what you expect and what you observe the character doing; behavior that contradicts a character’s prior behavior patterns. Ask Yourself: Why would the character act (feel) this way?
