Ecology. Energy Transfer All energy in an ecosystem comes from the sun There are 2 ways energy moves. – As organisms eat other organisms, energy is stored.
Ecological Pyramids. Instead of representing trophic levels in a food web, an ecological pyramid can be used. Grass (10,000 kcal) Grasshopper (1,000 kcal)
Energy in Ecology How is energy transferred?. Energy  All ecosystems must transfer energy.  Energy flows in ONE DIRECTION  Heat Energy (Sun)  changes.

Ecological Pyramids

Ecological pyramid: diagram that shows the relative amount of energy or matter within each trophic level of a food chain or web

Energy Pyramid Only part of the energy (about 10%) in one trophic level is passed on to the next level, why? Organisms use much of the energy for life processes & some is lost as heat. For example, 10% of the solar energy captured by grasses ends up stored in the tissues of grass-eating herbivores.

Biomass Pyramid Biomass: total amount of living tissue Biomass pyramid shows the amount of living matter at each level

Pyramid of Numbers Shows the actual number of individual organisms at each trophic level. What is missing from this pyramid?
