How does it work? After registration you will receive an email from Steph. The teams install the software on their computers. Each round, the team works through a number of different operating systems (OS) to find and fix problems with them. Each OS is stored as a virtual machine. A virtual machine (VM) is an OS that is installed on software inside your own OS. In Cyber Centurion, each VM is a simulation or imitation of a real computer. The end user has the same experience on a virtual machine as they would have on dedicated hardware. Why we are here: Emails – lots of information, useful but confusing especially if you are unfamiliar with the terminology. When you sign up a team you will receive an email. Teams working together with adult overseeing them, we want the young people to find their own solutions, your role is to facilitate in setting up the environment for them to learn However set up works – depending on your facilities, let them work it out, its about team work, delegation, leadership. We find the best teams are those who work together and figure out their own strengths. Some of you are more technical than others – this presentation ill assume a low level of technical knowledge, I am not a technical person, but using these steps I can easily get set up to start the practice rounds The point of the exercise is to experience different operating systems. The teams have to work through a briefing which tells them how the OS should eb set up if its working correctly. tHis like: permissions, user privileges, allowed/disallowed media etc. Its up to the team to review the OS and find where errors have been made – its up to them to fix these as they go along. Each tiem they fix these, or get something right, a reward sound will play and their points will increase. Obviously we don’t want them to install entirely new OS every time they use their computer so what we use instead are VMs. A VM is a simulated environment which allows you to run the OS to practice and make mistakes without risking your computer. And cruitially, they get the same experience as if they were using the real computer.

Why so much software? Some school-age cyber competitions remove the requirement for specialist software and tools, so the pupils can go straight into playing the game or activity, often in a browser (CSCUK do this themselves on some other competitions!) Cyber Centurion requires the teams to properly set up their competition environments themselves. There are 4/ 5 pieces of software involved in this before you get the images – they are all useful tools to help you, and you need them to compete the competition. Cyber Centurion requires the teams to properly set up their competition environments themselves. This is an important skill for them to develop, and provides a much richer experience as they have to configure and use different software and tools. This provides valuable skills for their future employment, it also provides experience using real tools.

Installing the software Building the environment

What Operating System do you have? Is it 64 bit or 32 bit? In Windows 10 you can find it easily: - Search bar at bottom > “About your PC” > System Type Google has easy guides for this depending on your own OS First things first, Last year we CC 4 was the first to use 64bit images, as more and more competitors are using 64 bit. We are aware some will still be using 32 – this will be fine, but if you do have any issues, please speak to Steph < next slide>

Enable Virtualisation Most vendors sell their computers with Virtualisation Technology (VT) disabled as a general security precaution. We need to switch it on so the VM software works, this is done by accessing the BIOS If you are unsure of how to access the BIOS settings, theres a video/ article or you can google it. Download Uncompressing Software https://www.7-zip.org/download.html Select the right exe for your OS, download it, run it to install A lot of files that are downloaded nowadays are large and can be comprised of many separate files. These files will arrive zipped, We need to be able to unzip (extract) these files easily when we receive and download them For CC we will use 7 zip Other unzip such as win zip will also work

Download CheckSum Software Sometimes when downloading files, some bits of the data can get lost on the way. In order to ensure we download the whole file completely and correctly, we need to check it is all there. We can do this by using a Check Sum. WinMD5 Freeware Download Unzip the folder (right click and Extract All). This creates an unzipped folder here with the program in it Popoadom analogy – this is to make sure you’ve got all of the right files – in their entirety, on the day Once ‘the environment’ is all set up with various software installed you’re ready for all three rounds and the main competition, Each round you will download a set of images. We need to make sure these have downloaded properly, because I don’t know what its like here, but where I live we’ve got bad internet – so its worth checking Example of check sum – as a noob this will show how easy it is…..

Install the Virtual Machine Software We now need to download software in order to run our VMs in All four pieces of software are in the email you will receive, if you already have VM ware on your PC just make sure it is up to date.

Can you connect to the Scoring System? In order for a team to register their scores, they need to check their computers are connected to the CyberPatriot Competition System (CCS) https://d2al8c3i8dfq61.cloudfront.net/CCS_Test_C onnection-6.1.zip Unzip it when it has downloaded and run it! This is used to check network connections to the scoring server before using a VM image Last but not least, this final piece of software helps you to check that your computer (s) can communicate to the scoring system in the US

Installing the VM Images

Download the VM Images You will be sent an email with your team name and codes There will also be a download link for the various images for that specific round These links will be in your email attachement and will look something like this Once you have downloaded them all, you need to use WinMD5 to check the file against the CheckSum provided If it matches, you can then unzip (extract) them, using the password provided in the email when prompted If the checksum doesn’t match, then you need to redownload the image

Install the VM images Open up VMware Workstation Player Click “Open a Virtual Machine” Navigate to where you have extracted the first VM image and select it This should then appear on the VM image list and can then be used Repeat this step for each VM image required in this specific round Here’s what one of the images looks like, I’m not going to go through it now as these are live & I want you to have a go yourself.
