Session: Go Green! Protect the Environment, Cut Costs, Teach Students and the Community St. Clair County Community College, Port Huron, Michigan Dr. Kevin Pollock, President
St. Clair County Community College
North Building – 100 years old
Mackenzie Science Building
Student Center – newer on campus
Walkway to Main Building
Main Building Entrance
The Black River – which leads to…
The St. Clair River – part of the Great Lakes system
Why did we “go green”? We are part of the “Great Lakes” Teaching and Learning opportunities Eventual cost savings Responsibility Leader in the community
Getting Started Ask about green at the development stage Don’t look for green projects and incorporate them into the campus, but utilize existing projects to forward green thinking Don’t think delay and patch but use projects to promote leadership difference
SC4 Green car (traditional needed replacement) Rain Garden (Roof drain separation) Server virtualization (needed replacement – purchased one to replace 10 reducing cost, footprint for space) Green Roof (roof replacement project)
SC4 Green wall (replacement of traditional brick wall) Parking lot (bio swales, green pavers) Parking lot (improved lighting on ground for safety and reduction “night pollution) Bidding includes green options
Gym Green Roof
Teaching and Learning: Green roof – water quality measurement, Social Science history, political issues, societal response Solar panels – measurement comparisons, automated viewing access
SC4 solar panels
SC4 wind turbine
Why a green wall? Improve water quality Reduce heat island effect of hardscapes Add a learning component Be a leader Beautify campus
Finished Green Retaining Wall
This past summer: Failure of the HVAC system in the North Building; Mandated sewer separation; Need to repair a crumbling parking lot; We decided to combine projects and “Go Green”!
The project: Repair the entire HVAC system in the North Building; Complete the sewer separation project; Remodel to parking lots; Install a geothermal system to heat and cool the North Building; Create a green space on our campus.
Collaborations: Local school district Siemens (Building Automated Systems) Sungard (integrate technology and project planning methodology) County officials
Estimated costs: Estimate of 20% more investment for green components Green roof was 28% increase (14% of roof is green) Green wall was 17% increase
Estimated Savings: 2010 Solar Panels for hot water system: $1,500 annually; 2010 Geo-thermal instillation: $52,000 annually; CEM and MB window replacement: Estimated $75,000 annually; 1999 Lighting replacement and motion sensors: $100,000 annually
Estimate savings: $27,000 Energy savings from building heating/cooling scheduling (Building Automated Systems) $70,000 of potential savings through additional scheduling changes $50,000 Operating savings from purchasing virtualized servers (reduced hardware cost and energy savings) $80,000 Cost avoidance and productivity savings (space use and staff time)
Additional Steps and Commitment:
THE AMERICAN COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY PRESIDENTS’ CLIMATE COMMITMENT The purpose of the ACUPCC is to exercise leadership in college and university communities and throughout society by modeling ways to minimize global warming emissions, and by providing the knowledge and the educated graduates to achieve climate neutrality. The ACUPCC provides a framework and support for America’s colleges and universities to go climate neutral.
Functions of the ACUPCC Address global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions Accelerate research and educational efforts of higher education to equip society to re-stabilize the earth’s climate Signatories are to be role models : For their communities For their students who will develop the social, economic and technological solutions to reverse global warming
St. Clair County Community College SC4 Signed on January 2008 To date 680 colleges and universities have signed on to this initiative. SC4 Climate Neutrality Target Date: 25% by 2020
SC4 CO2 Emissions
Additional Goals: Reduce, reuse, and recycle solid waste materials used on campus; Encourage alternatives to private automobiles to reduce emissions; Continue education and community outreach
Measuring success: Roofs – longer life, improved insulation Electric vehicle – reduced operating costs Building Automated System – scheduling of HVACs run times and temperatures, reduced consumption Teaching and learning opportunities
Measuring Success: Operating expenses; Promotion of institution as community leader; Curriculum and educational opportunities; Funding opportunities;
