TEAM UP! FOR HEATING AND COOLING SAVINGS It can be as easy as turning down a thermostat. Thanks for coming. I’m [INSERT NAME]. I’m going to outline some simple steps and tools we can use to reduce the energy used by our heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (or HVAC) system. And it all begins with you. You’re on the front lines. We’re going to talk about teaming up with your co-workers to spot chances to cut energy use. Together we can make a real difference – for the environment and for our bottom line.

Why should we care? For the environment For the bottom line It’s easy to feel that we can’t make a difference for the environment. But we can. Some simple changes to how we use our HVAC system can add up to big energy savings that help make this a greener place to work.

3 Why should we care? For the environment:
Turning down a thermostat can turn up big environmental gains. Turning down the heat at night can add up to big energy savings. [USE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING, DEPENDING ON HOW YOUR FACILITY IS HEATED] We use … … natural gas for heating. We can cut almost two tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions for every 1,000 cubic metres of natural gas we save. … oil for heating. We can cut over three tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions for every 1,000 litres of oil we save. And carbon dioxide is the major component of greenhouse gas emissions.

4 Why should we care? For our bottom line:
Turning down a thermostat can turn up the savings. For example, in Ontario alone, more than $600 million is spent annually to heat make-up air for building ventilation. Every year we spend about [INSERT FIGURE IF POSSIBLE] to heat our make-up air. Saving part of that energy can leave us with more money to invest in our company [OR] organization. That can help protect jobs and budgets. Consider this example. A pulp and paper mill is saving $1 million in natural gas charges plus eliminating almost 6,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, every year. Most of these savings came from simple energy efficiency measures, like cutting heat to vacant areas and asking staff to keep doors and windows closed. What can we do? Housekeeping Low-cost opportunities Retrofits There are three main areas to look at. From better energy management, all the way to alternative energy sources, there is a wealth of opportunities for us to generate big energy savings. 6 What can we do? Housekeeping Practice energy management:
– Shut down unneeded heating or cooling systems (turn off PCs and photocopiers). – Reduce humidification (monitor and clean the water in humidification system). Practising energy management means doing things like shutting down unneeded heating or cooling systems. It also means even simpler things, like turning off computers and photocopiers at the end of the day to cut the heat they produce. Reducing humidification touches on things like monitoring and cleaning the water we use in our humidification system. 7 What can we do? 2. Low-cost opportunities Block unneeded windows.
Insulate cold pipes and ducts. Implement an energy management system that reduces temperatures and ventilation rates. Low-cost opportunities are all around us. We want to look at things like blocking unneeded windows and insulating cold pipes and ducts. We should also consider implementing an energy management system. An energy management system that reduces temperatures and ventilation rates can yield big energy savings. But before we start, it’s important to know our HVAC load, because it varies between seasons. Implementing an energy management system can be as simple as installing programmable thermostats or as complex as installing digital controls. 8 What can we do? 3. Retrofits Plan heat recovery:
– Look at ways to capture that heat and re-use it. Consider alternative energy sources: – Think about solar power or ground source heat. Planning heat recovery can be complex. But it doesn’t have to be. It can be as simple as identifying where we are pumping warm air out of the facility. Once that’s done, we can start looking at ways to capture that heat and re-use it. Alternative energy sources have real potential. Solar power and ground source heat are two emerging areas. Could we make use of the process waste heat for hot water and solar heat for passive solar heating? Again, your ideas in this area could prove invaluable. We may not have the time or money to implement them now, but talking about alternative energy sources today could lead to big savings later when we have the opportunity to implement them.

How can we do it? We have the people We have the tools We have the people. The fact that you are here means we have already taken a giant step toward making our HVAC system more energy efficient. We need to build on this meeting. We have to encourage people who aren’t in this room to help identify energy savings. We need your ideas – right now and in the future.
