Facilitation Survival! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

As you go through the workshop… Write down what you notice the facilitators doing throughout the workshop. How do they speak? Where do they stand? How do they give directions? What words do you hear them use? How do they engage you, the audience? 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Partner up with someone from a different REGION than you… Make a list of 4 things that made what you were learning in a class exciting. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

NOW find a new partner! With your partner… Make a list of 4 thing that made what you were learning in class extremely BORINGGGGG! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. Write on a post-it note what this quote means to you. Stick it up on the wall when you’re done. “The more you (the facilitator) talk, the more you get in the way of the learning.” 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. The effective facilitator doesn’t tell people what they need to know, they create opportunities for people to find out what they need to know for themselves. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Starting your Workshop Kick off your workshop with a bang! Do something high-energy that gets everyone excited to participate! A fun skit that introduces your workshop A game that gets people moving around A quick icebreaker or get-to-know activity Your intro need to set the tone for your workshop. Don’t forget to introduce yourselves! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. Be prepared! Have your plans, visuals, activities, and materials ready to go. Practice giving your directions beforehand to make sure that they make sense! Assign parts to facilitate with your partner so you know who is responsible for each part. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Working with Delegates Be respectful, polite, and include everyone! Remember that EVERYONE has something to contribute. Teach your group a signal for when you need to get their attention! A raised hand A noise Some group symbol 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Picking Your Activities People learn in different ways Musical Logical Visual Auditory Intrapersonal (with others) Interpersonal (individual) Hands-on 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. Gallery Walk A gallery walk is a great way to get everyone’s thoughts on something in a way that is low risk for those not comfortable to share out in front of everyone. Walk around the room with a marker and write down something that someone with that M.I. might do to learn something. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

What did you notice about the gallery walk?? What was beneficial about it? What are some potential challenges? 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Utilize Multiple Intelligences Pick out activities that allow people to participate in many ways. Sharing with a partner Sharing with a whole group Writing down individually Draw a picture to show your thinking Make a rap that explains something important Build something to model important info 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Delivering your Activities Say what activity you’re doing. Give your directions in a clear and concise way. (2-3 directions at most!) Ask someone to repeat the directions so you know everyone understands what they’re about to do. Put yourself in a spot where you can help people get started. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. Some advice… It’s always good to get people up and moving! The goal of your conference is for leaders to network and meet new folk from around the state. Help facilitate that in your workshops! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. Debriefing How do you know that the people in your workshop are learning what you want them to learn? At MLW, one of the many things we do is called debriefing – asking questions that target what we want people to learn. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC. Debriefing Each activity should end with debriefing questions. That’s how you know people are understanding what you’re trying to share! In your handouts, there are TONS of stems for debriefing question. The highest levels of learning happen in the more challenging stages. 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Pair up with someone who is your height! Write down 5 questions you could use in your workshop using the Bloom’s Taxonomy Question Stems 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Pick a theme to go with your workshop! Themes are a little extra flavor to make your workshop even more exciting! SIDE NOTE: Don’t let your theme overpower your content, but have fun with it! Example: If you’re doing a Parliamentary Procedure workshop, you could make it a live game of Candyland where delegates advance to different areas on a giant game board, just like in Candyland. Then ya go crazy with candy! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

Meet with your training partner Write down 5 things you can implement from this workshop into your own workshop for next week! We encourage you to borrow and steal from how you’ve seen us facilitate! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.

If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right! Always remember…. If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right! 11/16/2018 Used with Pemission from Maryland Leadership Workshops, INC.
