Are Humans GOOD or EVIL? Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) Jean-Jaques Rousseau (1712-1778) Humans naturally wanted peace and harmony Democracy was a reflection of our belief in fairness and equality “Men in a state of nature do not know good and evil, but only their independence, and this, along with the peacefulness of their passions, and their ignorance of vice, prevents them from doing ill.” Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) Humans are selfish and only care about themselves Cause of violence and war We need to be taught obedience to a ruler in order to prevent chaos “Without the rule of law, the life of man would be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

Government Power Structures & the Common Good Can you name any styles of government?

The Common Good

Communism A society with no class system Everyone shares the work and wealth equally It has never worked successfully EX: USSR (1917-1991), Cuba, North Korea, China

Autocracy The wealthy run the country, make laws, and have all the power. EX: Iran, Libya, Saudi Arabia

Monarchy Power is in the hands of a king or Queen who was born to the job Rare today EX: Brunei

Constitutional Monarchy Monarch’s power is controlled by an elected Parliament that makes laws A form of democracy EX: Canada, Britain, Australia, Belgium

Dictatorship Can you name any more? Power is in the hands of one person Requires strong military support EX: Iraq under Saddam Hussein Can you name any more?

Democracy “demos” = the people “kratos” = power Therefore democracy implies…?

Democracy continued… Who do you think were considered citizens? Came from ancient Greece Believed that every citizen had the right to vote on new laws Called “direct democracy” Made sense in Athens with only 5000 “citizens” Who do you think were considered citizens?

Democracy continued… Today representatives make the laws on behalf of the people Called “representative democracy” Easier with our large size and population EX: United States, Canada, France

On your chart, come up with as many pros and cons as you can think of for the listed styles of government
