Smart Start Write about a time that you were new to a place. Why did you go there? Why did you leave where you were before? How did you feel? What did you have to do to make sure that you were going to be successful?

Today’s Objectives SWBAT define and analyze push and pull factors.

Keep in Mind Today we’re going to read stories about real people. They made decisions for reasons that you may or may not agree with, but we are going to be OPEN-MINDED and respect them for what they are trying to do.

Vocabulary: Push Factor A push factor is something that makes you want to move away from a place. Have scholars write down this definition in their notes packet.

Vocabulary: Pull Factor A pull factor is something that makes you want to move to a new place. Have scholars write down this vocabulary in their notes.

Important Question What is the difference between push factors and pull factors?

4 6 Gallery Walk With a partner, go to each station. Find the station number on your paper, and fill out the following information: Push or pull factor? Quick sketch of what it is When you’re finished, return to your seats. 4 Have scholars pair up with one other person. Scholars need to pick up a writing utensil, their notes packet, and something to write on. Only allow FIVE scholars per station – this way there is no more than 2 groups at any one station. Scholars should fill out the information INSIDE the number on their page – a sketch of the picture that they are looking at, and a label as a “push” or “pull” factor. Discuss all answers afterwards.

Independent Work Read and annotate the stories. Identify all of the push and pull factors that you can find.
